After a complicated year, Portland never despaired and now is looking ahead with new services. How long was the journey?

International maritime transport is not that simple.

Terminal 6 of the Port of Portland is receiving more services. The South Korean shipping company SM Line added two additional ships per month, to which is added an additional container service on a weekly basis, operated by MSC. It is a fantastic benefit for local businesses, farmers and producers in the region and also for consumers. Terminal 6 is productive and busy at a time of economic recovery.

According to the COO of the Port of Portland Dan Pippenger, the additional container service also brings more shipping, warehouse and trucking jobs to the region. That’s because the transportation of mercancies is not that simple. The operation of moving the merchandise from the sender to the recipient is actually composed of a series of critical functions whose modality changes depending on various variables, mainly depending on the nature of the load.

First of all, merchandise must be containerized, then it’s cleared from customs for exportation, it gets authorized by customs agents for being exported. The freight forwarder performs the cargo inspection and may also have to perform a consolidation or groupage for its containerization and its transfer to the port. Then the shipper selects the shipping line that allows meeting the established times and costs. Once the customs formalities have been completed, the containerized cargo will have to leave the port and stay in a warehouse waiting for his next trip. Finally, the merchandise is destined to the location of the consignee who will deliver it to the sender.

Even if it sounds simple it is a long process and is very important to not make mistakes. There’s a lot of people working and several activities involved that must be documented and checked, due to this has a lot of money compromised. Communication and automation would make the work well done. Also tools and equipment are vital for the process, but overall, technology. It’s not the same filling sheets of paper that may get lost or wet, than using one phone or tablet for doing the same without the need to wait for the information to arrive, it does instantly. Maybe Internet connection would be a problem, but not for Eskuad; every time the app caught even 2G signal, it will actualize and send all the information without losing it. The port is changing and also does the way of working.

We simplify management of teams that perform tasks and operate in the field, we collect data where it is generated in order to transform it into information that allows decision making on time.
